A Jesuit, Filipino, and Asian Ecclesiastical Faculty of Theology
In its October 4, 2012 meeting, the Faculty and Student Representatives Assembly (FASRA), the highest academic policy-making body of the Loyola School of Theology, approved the following policy revisions which will take effect beginning the Second Semester of the School Year 2012-2013:
1. Amendment of the provisions in the 2007 LST Student Handbook concerning the qualifications for the Honors STB Dogma Comprehensive Examination (no. 055)
“Students in the STB program with a 1.00 - 1.75 weighted average take the honors comprehensive examination. This average is computed from all the courses taken. Those whose average falls between 1.76 and 2.00 may appeal to the Standards and Degrees Committee to be allowed to take the honors comprehensive examination”.
2007 Provision: “Students who have four or more of the STB courses taken from another school — i.e., 12 or more of STB credit-units obtained from “transfer credits” — are allowed to take only the ordinary comprehensive examination”.
2012 Amendment: “To qualify for the honors comprehensive examination, a student's maximum number of transfer credits applicable from another institution will be 10 three-unit courses or 1/3 of the total LST STB units”.
2. Change in the selection process for the STB class valedictorian
The following criteria have been drawn up in the selection of the Valedictorian: academically outstanding, cum laude upwards; known leadership and service; public speaking ability.
The consultation should involve ¾ of the votes of the graduating class. Two names in the order of priority are submitted by the Student Council President to the LST President who will then make the decision.
The Dean’s Office collates the following materials for all those eligible for the Honors Comprehensives: student grades for 4 years and their weighted average; personal CV submitted by each student taking the Honors Comprehensives; copy of each student’s personal synthesis; final grade in the Honors Comprehensives and corresponding standing.
After the Comprehensive Examinations, the Dean’s Office forwards to the members of the Administrative Council (AC) the materials for all those who will be graduating with Honors.
The Student Council President will be given the list of those graduating with Honors and will conduct consultations on who can be valedictorian on the basis of proven leadership and ability to give a speech. Consultation should involve at least ¾ of graduating class, and the result is submitted to the President.
The AC then deliberates, taking into account all the materials and the results of student consultation, and the President then announces the decision who the valedictorian is.
