The Use of the Psalms in Hebrews 1-4

Nathaniel J. Hutchison (USA)

Master of Arts in Theological Studies, with a field of concentration in Biblical Theology.
Adviser: Dr. Markus Locker, Ph.D.

Abstract:

The Letter to the Hebrews is filled with Old Testament quotations and allusions. Hebrews is most likely a sermonic letter that opens with an eschatological claim regarding the final phase of God’s revelation in the Son (Heb. 1:1-4). This thesis seeks to explore and explain why the author of Hebrews quotes from several individual Psalms in the first four chapters of Hebrews. In fact, the author’s use of the Psalms may seem random or even haphazard. However, upon closer examination, the author of Hebrews judiciously chooses specific Psalms, and in the process, develops important perspectives in Christology and calls believers to persevere in faith.
