Abstract:
John 20:22 is viewed as the high point of the post-resurrectional activity of Jesus, the pneumatic climax where Jesus bestowed the Holy Spirit on the disciples. This was an act of commissioning them to continue his mission in the world. It is also the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise in John 7:37-39, John 14-16 that he would come again when he is glorified. It is the fulfillment of the pneumatological expectation of the disciples. It recreated the faith of the disciples which found them to experience from fear to joy and hope. Jesus is the bearer of the Spirit who bestows the Holy Spirit or Paraclete upon the disciples. The mission of Jesus continues through the witness of the Spirit-Paraclete, as Jesus’ advocate who bears witness to the gospel. It is the Spirit-Paraclete who sustains the presence of Jesus in the Church and in the world. The theme of pneumatology runs through the entire Fourth Gospel. Hence, the Johannine author displays a vibrant theology, which flows throughout the pneumatic texts of the Fourth Gospel. The presentation of the Father, the Son and the Spirit in the Fourth Gospel connotes that John has a Trinitarian theology with a missiological underpinning.
