Basic English Proficiency Program
The Basic English Proficiency Program offered by the Loyola School of Theology is designed to provide foundational English language communication skills essential for academic and professional success. The program’s objectives include improving participants’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. By focusing on practical language use and effective communication, the program aims to equip students with the necessary tools to excel in their theological studies and related fields.
The program is open to religious, priests, and lay foreign students. It consists of the following courses with nine (9) credits each:
TMP 295.93 Introduction to Basic English Language Communication Skills I (A1-A2 Beginner to Pre-Intermediate Level)
This course offers English to non-English students who wish to use the language as the primary mode of communication. This is an introduction to applying the four English skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
A1 focuses on grammar and vocabulary. It provides students with various exercises and activities useful to develop their speaking and listening skills to communicate on familiar topics and real-life situations using everyday expressions as well as simple phrases and sentences.
Students entering A2 are expected to have acquired the ability to communicate in English confidently. The students at this level can communicate in simple everyday tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on routine matters. A2 focuses on expanding the student’s knowledge of grammar usage, particularly, verb tenses. At this level, the students are given tasks that will allow them to integrate previous learnings in grammar and building vocabulary knowledge.
After completing this course, the students are expected to have acquired the basic skills and knowledge in English grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension, enabling them to confidently communicate in verbal and written form. Furthermore, this course will develop reading strategies required to comprehend academic materials and literature in various social media forms.
TMP 295.94 Introduction to Basic English Language Communication Skills II (B1-B2 Intermediate to High Intermediate Level).
This course enables students to enhance their English skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing by using advanced grammar patterns. To reach the B2 level, the students must have acquired a wide vocabulary and an in-depth application of the different parts of speech.
B1 focuses on developing grammatical patterns and sentence construction used in writing. This level focuses on improving the sentence construction skills of the students. Students learn how to write clear and well-developed sentences, paragraphs, and essays using various methods of organization. B2 focuses on improving the reading skills of the students through vocabulary enrichment, reading comprehension exercises, written activities, and class discussions.
At the end of this course, students are expected to be more confident English speakers and independent and efficient readers and writers.
REQUIREMENTS / PREREQUISITES
Mechanics
On the basis of a Diagnostic Test, students will be assigned to enroll in either A1-A2 or B1-B2 level for the entire semester. Only a maximum of 15 students will be admitted in each course.
These English courses have 9 credits each (or 18 ECTS, European Transfer Credit System) with an estimated fee of PhP 45,000 for the entire semester (4 months).
Diagnostic Tests are scheduled on dates to be announced by LST.
