LST Fund Raising for Scholarships for the Laity and Religious Sisters Launched

Sep 2, 2019

A campaign to raise funds for scholarships for the laity and religious sisters was launched at Loyola School of Theology during the Investiture Rites of Fr. Enrico C. Eusebio, S.J. as 10th President of LST held on August 28, 2019 at the Oratory of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
In his Inaugural Address, Fr. Eusebio said: “Indeed as an ecclesiastical faculty of theology and ministry, LST was originally established primarily for the formation of future priests. Nevertheless through these past 50 years, LST has intensely committed itself as well to the professional and ministerial formation of the laity and religious sisters, who are companions of the clergy in mission”. “Today at LST,” he continued, “out of our current student population of 463, we currently have 56 laymen, 53 laywomen and 39 religious sisters in our various degree and non-degree programs”.

Fr. Eusebio expressed Pope Francis’ desire that theological centers should “encourage as much as possible in addition to seminarians and religious, the participation … of lay people and women both lay and religious. In particular, the contribution that women are making and can make to theology is indispensable and their participation should therefore be supported” (Pope Francis, Address at the Meeting on the Theme, Theology After Veritatis Gaudium in the Context of the Mediterranean, Promoted by the Pontifical Faculty of Southern Italy, San Luigi Section, Naples, 21 June 2019).

In this regard, Fr. Eusebio announced the launching of LST’s special fund-raising project:  the LST Scholarship Fund for the Laity and Religious Sisters. With the generous assistance of benefactors who support LST’s cause, LST hopes to bring in twenty-million pesos (PhP 20,000,000.00) as capital for the scholarship fund. Only 70% of the interest will be used; 30% will be plowed back to maintain the value of the principal.

LST will offer scholarships covering coursework of students’ respective masters or doctoral degree programs, excluding thesis or dissertation writing. The full coursework of 45 units for a masters student at LST will cost approximately PhP 150,000 or USD 2,870 / EUR 2,590. For the doctorate, the cost for a student to complete coursework is approximately PhP 240,000 or USD 4,583 / EUR 4,134.

No donation to LST’s Scholarship Fund is ever too little to help support the Laity and Religious Sisters in pursuing degrees in theology and ministry.
