This course is a critical survey of the history of Catholic Theology in the 19th and 20th centuries. The course sets this history against the background of modern developments in philoso-phy, science and culture and attempts to chronicle the Churchs attempt to promote a unitary method for theology and the failure of this attempt in the 20th century. The course also seeks to enumerate the various theological developments that both preceded Vatican II, made it possible, and followed it. It also aims to highlight the contributions made by the different theological traditions adumbrated in this history and to map their possible usefulness for doing theology in the new millennium.
