Special Moral Theology II: Christian Social Ethics

This course in moral theology studies the development of the Church’s Social Teaching from Rerum Novarum (1891) to Centesimus Annus (1991). The historical and cultural context of the writing of each document is discussed, as well as the contribution of each document to the shaping of the Church’s position on social issues. The course also provides an appreciation of the pastoral application of Catholic social teaching in various Asian contexts. Themes in the Church’s social teaching – definitely relevant to the Asian context – are discussed such as human dignity, solidarity, common good, participation, subsidiarity.
