The primary goal of this tesina is to bring the idea of the importance of character development to the effectiveness of a leadership, especially the leadership of parish priests in the Manado diocese. As a leader, the parish priest is expected to be able to lead the parish entrusted to him effectively by realizing the ideals and common goals of the parish. There have been many researches and writings regarding leadership development models or methods for the parish priests. However, not many focus on character as an important part of leadership development. In fact, character is an essential and fundamental element of an effective and successful leadership.
The centrum of the study is on the leadership development of the parish priests in the Manado diocese. The Manado diocese lacks knowledge in the importance of character development for effective leadership, with no leadership programs based on character development held in the diocese.
The tesina takes on three perspectives: (a) the concept of character development for leadership in the perspective of secular leadership science, (b) the characters in the church leadership concept especially the parish priests, and (c) the importance of character in pastoral leadership according to the episcopal vicars of the Manado diocese.
The ultimate result of the study of the three points is a recommendation for a character-based leadership development program for parish priests in the Manado diocese. This program introduces the ideas and methods of character development for effective leadership to the priests in the Manado diocese, that they may endeavor to apply them in developing their respective parishes.
