Abstract:

This study proposes an Augustinian Reading of Micah 6:8. It investigates the meaning of the tripartite covenantal requirement “to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God” in Micah 6:8 and Augustine’s interpretation of it so that contemporary followers of the African bishop as well as other readers may gain insight from it. Their insights, as envisioned in this study, will add meaning to the rich discussion of the key phrases: “to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God” in Micah 6:8, considered by scholars as “the perfect definition of religion” and “the high point in the religious and moral thought of the Jewish people”. It is hoped that this study will guide contemporary readers in their response to the challenges of the present world, particularly in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the world that we want to rebuild.
