Abstract:
Bp. Robert Barron, known for his hugely popular 10-part Catholicism video series, is notable for explaining important Christian concepts into simple and engaging video content, executed with popular vigor while maintaining theological rigor. His works manage to convey deep theological truths that are easily appreciated by the laity. They have a huge potential for evangelization to mass Filipinos audiences, if not for the hurdle of language, since all his videos are in American English. This project thus seeks to provide a Filipino translation script of his recent documentary, the three-part “Priest, Prophet, King”, a work that powerfully explicates in layman’s imagery and experience, the trifold role of every baptized Christian to be priest, prophet, and king in imitation of Christ. The translation is in working script form, because it is aimed, not just for reading, but for local dubbing and subtitling use of mass Filipino audiences. In executing the project, the principle of dynamic equivalence, the standard best demonstrated by Nida and Taber, is used, contextualizing the truths, stories and metaphors in words and images the Filipinos can apprehend, without departing from original authorial intent. One peculiar challenge is the need for brevity of wordsmithing in Filipino to synch with the speaker’s visuals. It is hoped that this work stands, not only as an expression of a contextualized work of theology, but more practicably, as a subsequent video documentary that can easily be deployed to Christian viewers to whom Filipino is the first or perhaps only language, in the service of our imperative of evangelization. As St. John Paul ll expresses it, “Our hearts ring out with the words of Jesus when…after speaking to the crowds…he invited the apostle to ‘put out into the deep’ for a catch: ‘Duc in altum’ (Lk 5:4).”
