The Motif Of Silence In The Gospel Of Mark

Nguyen Van Hau (Vietnam)

Master of Arts in Theological Studies with concentration in Biblical Theology
Fr. Clifard Sunil Ranjar, S.J., S.S.L., S.T.D. (Adviser)

Abstract:

This study demonstrates that a motif of silence permeates the Gospel of Mark. By analyzing key passages in which silence appears- whether through Jesus’ actions, the disciples’ responses, or the reactions of various characters – and by examining its theological, literary, and narrative functions within the text, this study reveals how silence is a dynamic and purposeful element and operates as a powerful communicative tool that shapes the reader’s understanding of Jesus’ identity and mission,  influences the Gospel’s structure, pacing, and dramatic tension, and invites believers into a transformative encounter with the mystery of the Gospel.
