Abstract:
This thesis is a product of a contextual reflection about the major societal issues that require an appropriate theological diagnosis and redress. Education is a foundation of all human development and it is a template on which human integral formation is based. This project intends to highlight the desirable approaches in the field of Media Literacy Education regarding pedagogy. The thesis explores the moral pedagogical approach in teaching media literacy mostly in high schools. It covers a brief historical background of media literacy through the admonitions and teachings of Popes, and the efforts of some organizations like UNESCO. After conducting surveys in high schools in Uganda and here in the Philippines, the researcher realized that schools use different approaches to teach media literacy but express a need for the moral aspect to be included. The author was able to look at the curricula and lesson plans and realized that much emphasis is put in equipping students with skill competencies in the job market. The researcher highlights some areas where due attention is desired, proposing virtue ethics to be integrated with Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm in teaching and learning in media literacy. This work will benefit schools, curriculum developers, parents, non-government organizations dealing with education and teacher training colleges. It can also be used in parish catechetical programs.
